Introducing "The Gateway Tapes," the latest offering from Hungarian duo SYNONYMS. Recorded in Budapest in 2023, this six-track EP invites listeners on a transcendent journey through the depths of consciousness and the mysteries of existence.
Drawing on elements of instrumental hip-hop, trip-hop, and electronica, SYNONYMS' newest release explores a fusion of hypnotic beats and atmospheric textures. Building on their previous releases, including their self-titled album "SYNONYMS" and the interconnected EPs "Segments" and "Territory," "The Gateway Tapes" marks a new era for the duo.
The Gateway Tapes refer to a series of audio recordings developed by the Monroe Institute in the 1970s, under the guidance of Robert Monroe. Monroe, a pioneer in the exploration of consciousness, sought to create a program that would facilitate altered states of consciousness and personal growth. The Gateway Experience, of which the tapes are a central component, aimed to help individuals explore realms of consciousness beyond the ordinary waking state. At the heart of the Gateway Tapes is the concept of Hemispheric Synchronization, or Hemi-Sync, a patented audio technology developed by Monroe. Hemi-Sync involves using binaural beats—audio signals of slightly different frequencies presented to each ear—to synchronize the brain's hemispheres.

SYNONYMS was formed in the spring of 2020 as a duo project by Kristóf Huszár and Gergő Matos. During the quarantine period, they started working on songs by passing tracks and projects back and forth to each other. Later, they jointly developed these ideas, resulting in an eight-track album released monthly as singles starting in the spring of 2021. Their music is greatly inspired by the genre of film and film scores, as well as thinking in images. They created their first album based on the narrative of a nonexistent film, incorporating its peaks, valleys, and twists. This should be imagined as a fusion of electronic, dance-oriented, and guitar-based music, but with more daring departures from their narratives. Their live setup is realized as a non-stop live act, which resembles a DJ set in its structure but includes live instruments and improvisational elements.
This is not the first musical project for the guys; both of them have already created albums with other projects. Kristóf is known solo as Christopher Waver, as a member of AGAVOID, and as the founder of the independent label PLUTO Sound. In addition to this, he has contributed to numerous music projects in production/mixing/mastering roles. Gergő is the founder of the band Isle of Man. He has also appeared in small film projects as a composer and sound designer.
